As its name implies, the barre workout was born out of traditional ballet routines. This method is widely credited with helping dancers achieve their famously lean, long and slim figures. Though there are currently many twists on the technique, the original exercises were developed by a Russian dancer named Lotte Berk, who used it to recover from a serious spinal injury in the mid-20th century.
Our barre classes are full-body workouts that additionally target specific areas for fat burning and muscle definition. While it is normally difficult to spot-reduce deposits of fat throughout our body, our barre classes combine the fat-burning format of interval training with a muscle-shaping approach: small isometric movements that work the muscle to fatigue, and then lengthen it via stretching. This technique can be used to tone and sculpt your arms, abs, thighs and butt, safely reshaping the entire body with a single, low-impact exercise routine.
The result of this vigorous workout–which also incorporates elements of Pilates fundamentals and light resistance training–is a recognizable barre body, featuring sculpted arms, flat abs, a lifted rear end, and elongated thighs.
Natalie Portman famously shaped up for her role in Black Swan using barre exercises. Other celebrity devotees include Zooey Deschanel, Madonna and Kelly Ripa, who notes that ballet-inspired fitness sessions have worked wonders on her petite physique. “The classes have "transformed my body in ways I never thought possible. I'm a short person, but I'm becoming longer and leaner,” she has said.
